TEST FORMAT
J.TEST format and test times.
The J.TEST has a reading test and a listening test, each with four sections — eight in total. The listening test starts straight after the reading test, with no break.
| Test | Reading test | Listening test |
|---|---|---|
| A-C | 80 min | about 45 min |
| D-E | 70 min | about 35 min |
| F-G | 60 min | about 25 min |
Four reading sections
The A-C and D-E reading tests have four sections: grammar and vocabulary, reading, kanji and written answers. In the F-G test, short-sentence composition (multiple choice) replaces the written section.
- 1 Grammar and vocabulary
- 2 Reading
- 3 Kanji
- 4 Written answers (F-G: short-sentence composition, multiple choice)
Four listening sections
The listening test has photo questions, listening while reading charts or text (聴読解), responses to short remarks, and questions on conversations and explanations.
- 1 Photo questions
- 2 Listening with charts and text
- 3 Responses
- 4 Conversations and explanations
Written questions
The A-C and D-E tests include written questions such as writing the reading of kanji and composing short sentences. The F-G test is entirely multiple choice.
In JTEST Pass you can type written answers and have them graded automatically (a JTEST Pro feature).
